In the third round of Group A at the World Cup, African side South Africa edged South Korea 1–0 thanks to a decisive goal from Maseko. They finished the group stage with one win, one draw and one loss, collecting four points, and progressed to the Round of 32 as group runners-up ahead of their opponents.

This marks the first time in South Africa’s history that they have reached the World Cup knockout stage. In their previous three appearances at the finals, they were eliminated in the group stage each time and failed to advance.
