After scoring a goal in the World Cup Round of 16 to help Portugal defeat Croatia 2–1 and advance to the last 16, Cristiano Ronaldo gave an interview to Fox Sports.

Cristiano, congratulations on reaching the Round of 16. Today is also the anniversary of Diogo Jota’s passing. It’s a very special day, and a great No.21 (at this moment Ronaldo turned and showed the number on the back of his shirt), Diogo Jota’s number. What does such a special day mean for Portugal?
Incredible. We knew it before the match even started—it was such a special moment. We talked about it within the team today. The coincidences in life are truly unbelievable. I’m amazed, because of what today represents. It means a lot to us, not only because we won the match, but also because of the way we won it.
It was a very difficult game. We knew Croatia are a fantastic team. In the first half we controlled the match, but in the second half, after they scored, we became a bit nervous. But that’s football. After my goal was ruled out for offside, we started to regain belief. We asked the fans to help and support us. After the penalty incident, I think the situation became a bit better for us and we created several chances. So I think, in the end, we deserved to win this match.
What was it like facing Luka Modrić as an opponent? It seems this could be his last World Cup…
I’ve played alongside Luka for many years—we are almost the same age. I think he is, without any doubt, a legend of football, and he remains a legend because he is still playing at an incredibly high level. The standard he continues to show is unbelievable.
And I’ve told him many times: “Luka, congratulations on everything you’ve achieved. It’s a pleasure to see you again, and I wish you all the best in the rest of your career.” It’s always a pleasure to face him again as an opponent.
Are you confident going into the Round of 16 against Spain?
After this victory, we are always full of confidence. We know the next match will be very difficult, but this is the World Cup—we have to be ready, and we are ready for it.
