Uruguay has turned to one of its greatest football icons after appointing Diego Forlán as the national team's interim head coach. The former striker will guide the senior squad through the next international window while also taking charge of the country's Under-20 team on a permanent basis. His appointment marks a new chapter for Uruguayan football as the federation begins planning for the future following a disappointing end to the 2026 World Cup campaign.

Forlán replaces Marcelo Bielsa, whose tenure concluded after Uruguay failed to progress beyond the group stage of the World Cup. A series of underwhelming performances, combined with reported tensions within the squad, brought Bielsa's time in charge to an end when his contract expired. The Uruguayan Football Association will continue its sarch for a long-term manager, but Forlán has been entrusted with leading the national team until at least the federation's presidential elections in March 2027.

During his interim spell, the 47-year-old will oversee six FIFA international friendlies while also preparing the Under-20 side for the 2027 South American Championship. That tournament will be crucial for Uruguay's hopes of qualifying for the FIFA U-20 World Cup, giving Forlán an important role in shaping both the senior and youth national teams during a transitional period.

Although this is only his third managerial position, Forlán brings immense experience and credibility from an outstanding playing career. He earned 112 international caps, scored 36 goals for Uruguay, and was named the best player at the 2010 FIFA World Cup after inspiring his country to the semifinals. His success at clubs including Manchester United, Villarreal, and Atlético Madrid established him as one of Uruguay's finest footballers, and the federation now hopes his leadership can help restore the national team's competitiveness.
