Raphinha said he understands why he has received plenty of criticism, explaining that fans only criticize players when they expect a lot from them.

Speaking to TNT Sports, Raphinha said: “There are a lot of new players in the Brazil squad. It’s good. A new cycle is beginning.”

Raphinha was then asked how he felt about the criticism he received over his performances at the World Cup.

“Those criticisms hurt to some extent, but we have to be prepared for them. Fans criticize the players they expect results from, so if they are criticizing me, it means they have expectations of me.

“Over the past two years, I haven’t been able to deliver the results they expected from me. Every time I put on the national team shirt, I try to do my best, but football is ultimately about results.

“I want to produce the same kind of performances for Brazil that I have produced at Barcelona — scoring goals, providing assists, winning games and lifting trophies. But when those things don’t happen, fans put pressure on you.

“Some of the criticism has gone too far, and I don’t agree with it, but everyone has their own way of expressing themselves. Some people go further than others and have no limits. Eventually, they stop talking about football and start attacking your private life. But everyone has their own way of expressing themselves.”

Although he admitted that he is unhappy with the situation, the 29-year-old has never considered asking to be left out of the national team.

“As long as I have the opportunity to wear the national team shirt, I will always try to be at my best. Once we start winning, confidence will gradually return and the games will become easier.

“I’m disappointed that I didn’t perform at my best at the World Cup. I only played around one and a half matches. I know I could have performed much better than I did in those one and a half games.

"My desire has always been to perform at my best and contribute as much as possible. What I have done at Barcelona shows what I can bring to the national team.”
