Manchester United have been rocked by a surprise request from teenage wonderkid JJ Gabriel, who has asked to leave the club despite being regarded as one of the brightest prospects in their academy. The 15-year-old has attracted significant attention in recent years and earned the nickname Kid Messi because of his exciting style and exceptional potential. United had been preparing for the possibility of Gabriel making his senior debut during the current campaign.
According to reports, Gabriel has asked Manchester United to cancel his registration and allow him to depart. The club have not approved the request and believe the situation can still be resolved. Gabriel has been part of United’s academy since he was 11, while his current agreement remains valid until the end of the season, giving the club grounds to resist his attempt to leave.
The situation is also complicated by age regulations. Gabriel cannot sign a professional contract until he turns 17, while a scholarship agreement cannot be registered until he reaches 16. That means he is not currently in a position to immediately join another club through a conventional arrangement. His apparent decision to remove Manchester United-related content from his Instagram account has nevertheless added to speculation surrounding his future.
Barcelona are also believed to have maintained a long-term interest in Gabriel, making the situation particularly significant for United. His Irish passport could allow him to leave the United Kingdom at 16 and move to Europe, potentially opening the door to opportunities outside England. For now, United are hoping to settle the matter and keep one of their most highly regarded academy talents at Old Trafford.
