Spain have extended Luis de la Fuente’s contract as head coach until 2032 following his impressive run with the national team. The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) approved the new agreement on Monday, extending his previous deal, which was due to expire in 2028.

The new contract will see De la Fuente oversee Spain’s title defence at the 2030 World Cup, which the country will co-host with Morocco and Portugal. He will also remain in charge through the 2032 European Championship, jointly staged by Italy and Türkiye, giving Spain continuity across two major international tournaments.

De la Fuente, 65, took charge at the end of 2022 after Luis Enrique departed following Spain’s last-16 elimination by Morocco at the World Cup. Since then, he has guided La Roja to the 2023 UEFA Nations League title, the 2024 European Championship and the 2030 World Cup, matching Spain’s second World Cup triumph in their history. His success followed an earlier spell working with Spain’s youth teams, where he won the Under-19 and Under-21 European Championships and helped the Olympic side secure silver at the Tokyo Games in 2021.

Spain are now preparing for their return to international action after their World Cup final victory over Argentina in New Jersey in July. Their next assignment comes against England at Wembley, before matches against Croatia and Czechia, followed by another away fixture against Croatia as part of a busy UEFA Nations League schedule.
